Alumnae Achievement Awards 1982

Andrea Kundsin Dupree '60
Astrophysicist
Author

Andrea Kundsin Dupree received a B.A. in astronomy and physics from Wellesley College in 1960, as well as the prestigious Woodrow Wilson Fellowship award. In 1968, she received her doctorate in astrophysics from Harvard University.

In a male-dominated field, Dupree has worked hard to attain gender equality in astronomy. In 1980, she was appointed as an associate director of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. She was the youngest person and the first woman to hold that position. In 1996, Dupree was elected president of the American Astronomical Society.

Dupree is currently a senior astrophysicist at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory.
