Alumnae Achievement Awards 1981

Judith Rothschild '43
Abstract Artist

Judith Rothschild, a noted abstract painter, graduated from Wellesley in 1943 with a degree in art history. After graduating, she studied at the Art Students League in Manhattan under Reginald Marsh and Hans Hofmann. With Hofmann’s guidance, Rothschild developed her techniques in abstract painting and was voted into the American Abstract Artists organization in 1945.

Rothschild was committed to sharing opportunities of advancement with her fellow artists. She joined the Jane Street artists’ cooperative in 1945, and she also collaborated with other artists to form the cooperative Long Point Gallery in Provincetown on Cape Cod. At various times, Rothschild served as the trustee of the American Federation of Arts, the MacDowell Colony, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, and the New York Studio School. She also served on museum committees at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Arts, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the art museums at Wellesley, Williams, and Bard College.

Judith Rothschild died in March 1993.
