WORCESTER, MASS.  -  The Wellesley College crew team took home fifth place at the New England Rowing Championships on a misty Saturday afternoon in Worcester.  Highlighting the day, Wellesley's first novice boat won a bronze medal.

In the first novice race, Wellesley bounced back from a tough first heat to take third in the grand final.  The Blue finished behind only Williams, who took first place, and Simmons, who finished second.  "The first novice boat has been such a strong force all year gathering us some big points when we needed them and today was the icing on the cake," said head coach Tessa Spillane.

Also racing with the first novice boats, Wellesley's second novice qualified for the petite final, passing UVM's first novice and placing fifth in the heat.  In the petite final, they once again surpassed UVM and also defeated the second novice from Smith.

Wellesley's third varsity boat finished just out of the top three, with a fourth place finish behind only Williams, Holy Cross and Tufts.  "After a super undefeated regular season, they raced well and will bring it again next weekend," added Spillane.

In the second varsity eight race, Wellesley suffered a set-back due to an injury to stroke, Hannah Dornbusch.  However, Laura Weir stepped up from the third varsity boat and Wellesley took second place in the petite final.  With 1.7 seconds separating second, third and fourth place, the Blue pulled it out, defeating Bates, Colby and Mount Holyoke.

After struggling in their first race, Wellesley's first varsity boat raced in a fast and tight petite final.  The Blue secured a sixth place finish, defeating Colby by 8/100ths of a second and securing third place for the Blue overall.

Four of Wellesley's boatd will now move on to the ECAC Championships next weekend.  Wellesley's first, second and third varsity boats will race, as will the first novice boat.  Although the season is finished for the second novice boat, coach Spillane adds, "Special thank you to the "Falcon," our 2N for a great season and a BLOWOUT weekend!"
