Wellesley Crew Takes 2008 Florence Cup

WORCESTER, MASS. 4/19/08 - With strong finishes in every race, the Wellesley Blue Crew teamed up to win the Florence Jope Smith Cup, awarded to the team with the highest number of points at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Rowing Championship on Saturday morning at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.  The Blue totaled 40 points on the day, with Mount Holyoke and Smith close behind with 38 and 36 points, respectively.

Wellesley started the day strong, as the novice eight won their race in a time of 7:22.02.  The third varsity eight followed suit, winning in 7:22.7.  The second varsity eight and first varsity eight both rowed extremely well, as each boat took third to secure Wellesley's first-ever Florence Cup.

Wellesley head coach Tessa Spillane is thrilled with the team's result. "It shows the true depth of this team and it shows just how motivated this team is to go even further up the ranks," said Spillane.  "They raced with so much determination and showed so much grace in their victories and I couldn't be prouder of the entire team from the 2N to the 1V."

The United States Coast Guard Academy captured their second straight NEWMAC varsity eight title with a first place time of 6:52.07.  Coast Guard edged Mount Holyoke College (6:57.77) by just over five seconds to secure the victory. Wellesley College placed third (7:00.36); Smith College took fourth (7:03.37); WPI was fifth (7:15.53), and Clark University finished sixth (7:27.68).
