Wellesley Crew Races Smith, Simmons

BOSTON, MA – With the cancellation of the 2007 Seven Sisters Regatta on Saturday, the Wellesley crew team took to the water on Sunday for an impromtu race on the Charles River against Smith College and Simmons College.

Five boats represented Wellesley on the 2.5 mile course in a novice race, a JV race and a Varsity race.

Racing for the first time, the Wellesley novice boats took second and fourth places against teams that have already raced several times this fall. Wellesley's first novice boat finished second in 17:08.2, just four seconds off of Simmons' first novice boat. The Blue's second novice boat took fourth place, defeating both the Smith and the Simmons second novice boats.

In the second race of the day, both the Wellesley second- and third- varsity boats posted fast times as they crossed the finish line second and third. The Wellesley 2V took second place in a time of 16:23.9 while the 3V finished third in 16:59.6.

In the final race of the day, the Wellesley Varsity Eight battled rough and windy conditions to post a time of 16:20.8.

The Blue will return to the water for the spring season in March.
