Wellesley Runners Place Third at NEWMAC Championship

Results

Northampton, MA-- The Wellesley College cross country team took third place at the 2007 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships held on the campus of Smith College.  The Blue finished third with 106 team points, trailing only Wheaton (72 points) and MIT who took the title with 50 points.

Capping an excellent senior season for Wellesley, Kerry Shanley (Marshfield, MA) was the top finisher for the Blue.  Shanley took eighth-place in a time of 19:53.60 and earned her first All-Conference honor as one of the top 14 competitors.

Wellesley runners once again finished in a tight pack with all five point-scorers finishing in the top 30 out of 130 runners at the event which was held in the rain on a  5,000-meter course. Sophomore Clare Egan (Cape Elizabeth, ME), last season's NEWMAC Runner of the Year, took 20th place in a time of 20:18.80.  Finishing right behind Egan was junior Jessica Weng (Paramus, NJ) who took 21st place in a time of 20:18.80. 

Crossing the finish line next for Wellesley were Katrina Utz (Middletown, RI) and Maura Tucker (Albany, NY) who took 28th and 29th places, respectively. Utz finished the course in 20:30.90 while Tucker came in with a time of 20:33.40.  Also finishing in the top 30 was Katie Gosling (Palo Alto, CA) who finished the 5K course in 20:35.10.

Other competitors for Wellesley were: Amy Damon (Livermore, ME) - 31st, 20:36.90; Anya Ravitz (Hopkinton, MA) - 33rd, 20:47.80; Ashley Muller (Downers Grove, IL) - 34th, 20:52.70; Hannah Sholder (Pittsburgh, PA) - 38th, 21:06.20; Elizabeth Hubertz (Fort Wayne, IN) - 47th, 21:33.20; Meagan Lewis (Danville, KY) - 51st, 21:38.40; Katie Watson (Olympia, WA) - 53rd, 21:39.80; Karyn Clements (Cobleskill, NY) - 61, 22:13.20; and Sarah Ifrah (Pacific Palisades, CA) - 73rd,, 22:35.90.

Wellesley will return to action on Saturday, November 10th, when they run at the NCAA Division III New England Championship at Connecticut College in Waterford, CT.
