WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College senior Jessica Weng (Paramus, NJ) was the top individual finisher as the Blue won the 2008 Wellesley Invitational. The hosts totaled five top-ten finishes to edge out Coast Guard Academy for the team title.
Weng finished the 5,000-meter lake course in a time of 19:52, good for first place in a field of 36 runners. After Weng, seniors Amy Damon (Livermore, ME) and Hannah Sholder (Pittsburgh, PA) took second and third place with times of 19:55 and 19:58 while junior Katie Gosling (Palto Alto, CA) took fourth place in 20:21. Taking fifth place was Coast Guard's Gwen English (Deptford, NJ) who finished in a time of 20:26.
Wellesley finished with 19 points while Coast Guard's 36 points were second. The Bears were led by English (5th), and Tessa Knott (Prairie du Sac, WI), Colin Fall (Mound, MN) and Katie Schumacher (St. Louis, MO) who finished 6th (21:20), 7th (21:28) and 8th (21:32).
Saint Joseph took third place with 80 points and were led by junior Ashley Debella (Newington, CT) who took 12th place in a time of 21:41.
The race marked the last home competition for the five senior members of the team. Since they joined the team in 2005, this year’s seniors have the 2005 Seven Sisters Championship as well as the 2005 NEWMAC title. On their home course, the Blue have won the last four Wellesley Invitational meets.
Amy Damon is an Anthropology major from Livermore, Maine.
Johanna Lake is an Environmental Studies major from Sanbornton, New Hampshire.
Hannah Sholder is a Sociology and Peace and Justice Studies major from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Kate Watson is an Economics and Sociology major from Olympia, Washington.
Jessica Weng is a Psychology and Biological Chemistry major from Paramus, New Jersey.
Wellesley will next compete in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Championships that will be held at Franklin Park in Boston on Saturday, November 1st at 12:00 pm.
