Wellesley Cross Country Takes Second at NEWMAC Championships
Boots, Cummings Named to NEWMAC All-Conference

Results

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wellesley College cross country team took second place at the 2009 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship held on Saturday in Boston’s Franklin Park. MIT took first place at the event, winning their sixth NEWMAC Championship.

Wellesley was led by All-Conference runners, Randelle Boots (Seekonk, MA) and Claire Cummings (Norway, ME), both first-years.  Boots placed ninth overall in a time of 19:36, while Cummings took 12th in 20:00.  Following, Boots and Cummings, the Blue placed all scorers in the top-25. Clare Egan (Stuart, FL) took 19th place in a time of 20:35, while Eliza Tibbits (Old Town, ME) placed 20th in 20:35.  Closing out the top runners for Wellesley, Camille Basurto (Wilton, CT), Cailey Stevens (Kodiak, AK) and Cristina Lucas (Glendale, CA) crossed the finish line back-to-back-to-back, in 23rd (20:49), 24th (20:50) and 25th place (20:52).

In the women’s race, the Engineers’ placed six runners in the top seven, with their final scoring runner placing 11th overall. In total, they finished with 18 points, surpassing second-place Wellesley, who recorded 75 points.  MIT senior Maria Monks, who covered the five-kilometer course in a time of 18:32, captured Runner of the Year honors. Monks edged out the second-place finisher, teammate Jacqui Wentz, 2008’s Runner of the Year.  MIT’s Brooke Johnson was the first freshman to cross the finish line, with her fourth-place time of 19:20 earning her Rookie of the Year honors. 

Wellesley returns to action at the NCAA Regional Championships on November 14th.  The meet will be hosted by the University of Southern Maine in Cumberland, ME.
