Wellesley College Cross Country Wins Smith Invitational
Results
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Wellesley College cross country team placed five runners in the top twelve to win the 2009 Smith College Invitational. The Blue were led by a pair of first-year runners, Camille Basurto (Wilton, CT) and Claire Cummings (Norway, ME) who placed in the top five.
Basuto, running her collegiate race, took third place in a time of 20:09.46. Cummings was also impressive, finishing in fifth place (20:32.83) in her first ever cross country race.
The Blue also saw three other top-12 finishes on the morning. Junior Eliza Tibbits (Old Town, ME) took eighth place in 20:46.79 while sophomore Leah Clement (East Lyme, CT) finished 10th in 20:55.35. Senior Clare Egan (Stuart, FL) took 12th overall in a time of 21:04.43.
Also finishing for Wellesley was first-year Evelyn Haro (Sylmar, CA) who took 37th overall in the 124-runner field. She ran a 22:34.26.
Smith senior Anna Cressotti took the overall individual title, crossing the finish line in 19:43.98.
Wellesley won the race with 38 points followed by Coast Guard (59), Smith (60), Westfield State (64), Mount Holyoke (140), Clark (181), Norwich (221), MCLA (231), Saint Joseph (278) and New England College (286). Blue runners averaged a time of 20:41.78.
Wellesley is back in action next Saturday at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational.
