Coast Guard Wins Wellesley Cross Country Invitational
Cummings Top Individual Finisher

WENHAM, Mass. – Wellesley College first-year Claire Cummings (Norway, ME) took home individual honors at the 2009 Wellesley College Cross Country Invitational, but the Blue were edged out by Coast Guard, who took the team title.
Cummings finished in a time of 19:31 for her first collegiate win amongst 53 competitors in the 5K race.
Coast Guard finished with a team total of 29 points, just ahead of Wellesley's 28. Connecticut College took third with 87 points, while Saint Joseph placed fourth with 113.
The Bears placed six runners in the top ten, with Sarah Blatt (Hannibal, OH) leading the way with a time of 19:36, good for second place overall. Tessa Knott (Prairie du Sac, WI) took third in 19:49 while Katie Schumacher (St. Louis, MO) placed sixth in 20:34. Rounding out the top finishers for Coast Guard were Mary Kate Neatrour (Fairfax, VA) in eighth (20:42), Bryce VanCleef (Amherst, MA) in ninth (20:43) and Caroline Trusdell (Piedmont, CA) in 10th (20:45).
Wellesley had four top ten performances. After Cummings, Claire Egan (Stuart, FL) took fourth overall in 20:06, Cailey Stevens (Kodiak, AK) placed fifth in 20:29 and Ashley Muller (Downers Grove, IL) finished seventh in 20:41. The Blue also got solid showings from KC Clements (Cobleskill, NY) who took 12th in a time of 21:10 and Kate Gosling (Palo Alto, CA) who placed 13th in 21:13. Sara Putterman (Bethesda, MD) rounded out the Wellesley scoring in 17th place with a 22:16.
Conn placed two runners in the top 20. Melanie Poole (Middlefield, CT) took 14th place in a time of 21:22, while Clare Murphy-Hagan (Portland, OR) placed 18th in 21:56.
Saint Joseph was led by Ashley Debella (Newington, CT) in 16th place, with a time of 21:43.
Wellesley cross country returns to action on October 31st as the Blue host the NEWMAC Championships at Franklin Park in Boston.
