Wellesley Fencing Sends Eight to NCAA Regional

Providence, R.I. -- Eight members of the Wellesley College fencing team competed in the 2010 NCAA Northeast Regionals on Sunday at Brown University. It is the first time in school history that the Blue have had eight competitors qualify for the regional tournament.
Hannah Braaten (Concord, MA) highlighted the trip for Wellesley with a 17th-place finish. The junior advanced through the first round undefeated with four wins. In the second round of rankings, she picked up three victories to advance to the third round where she recorded two wins to finish 17th overall. Samantha Kim (Westlake Village, CA) and Cate Yoon (Seoul, South Korea) also recorded one win each in the first round of competition to finish 37th and 39th respectively.
In Epee, both Annemarie Kocab (Farmington Hills, MI) and Ashley Paquin (Cumberland, RI) recorded three victories in the first round of rankings. Kocab won three times in the second round to advance to the third round where she won twice to finish 21st overall. Paquin picked up two wins in the second round to finish 28th overall.
Crystal Aiken (Eden, NC), Elizabeth Rowen (Santa Cruz, CA), and Zsofia Schweger (Budapest, Hungary) competed for the Blue in the Sabre competition. Rowen and Schweger each won twice in the first round, but just missed the cutoff to advance to the second round, finishing 37th and 38th respectively.
The 2009-2010 fencing team finished their season with a 9-9 overall record.
