Wellesley Fencing Goes 2-3 at Northeast Conference Meet


MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Wellesley College fencing team competed in the second Northeast Conference meet of the season on Saturday at Tufts University. The Blue went 2-3 against tough competition, with all three of their losses coming by just one point.

Wellesley picked up its wins against Smith and Dartmouth. Against Smith, the Blue posted a 6-3 win in foil and an 8-1 win in epee. Despite a 3-6 setback in sabre, Wellesley finished with a 17-10 win. Against Dartmouth, Wellesley posted wins at all three weapons in a convincing 21-6 team victory. The Blue won 7-2 in foil, 8-1 in epee and 6-3 in sabre.

The Blue suffered three narrow 13-14 losses in their other matches, falling victim to Tufts, Vassar and Boston College. Against Tufts, Wellesley took foil 6-3, but fell 3-6 in epee and 4-5 in sabre. In the Vassar bout, the Blue won both foil and epee by 5-4 scores, but dropped the sabre competition 3-6. Wrapping up the day, Wellesley won epee 8-1 against Boston College, but fell 3-6 in foil and 2-7 in sabre.

Wellesley fencing next competes at the New England Championships, hosted by Mount Holyoke on February 21st.
