Wellesley Fencing Opens 2009 at "The Big One"

SOUTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Wellesley College fencing team opened the 2009-10 season at Smith College competing in the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference Fall Invitational.  The meet, known as "The Big One," featured over 230 fencers from 23 colleges.

Wellesley's meet was highlighted by two top-ten finishes from the Blue.  Junior foil standout, Hannah Braaten (Concord, MA) earned a silver medal, taking second place overall out of 78 participants.  Braaten improved upon last year's seventh-place finish.  Senior Emily Johnson (Pittstown, NJ), placed ninth overall in epee competing against 71 fencers. She moved up two spots from last year's 11th-place performance.

Also for Wellesley, sophomore Samantha Kim (Westlake Village, CA) took 16th place in foil, while junior Ashley Paquin (Cumberland, RI) notched a 17th-place finish in the epee competition. 

In sabre, junior Elizabeth Rowen (Santa Cruz, CA) finished 26th amongst 69 participants, while Zsofia Schweger (Budapest, Hungary) rounded out Wellesley's top performances with a 34th-place finish.

Wellesley fencing will return to action on Saturday, November 21st as the Blue travel to Brown University for the first Northeast Conference meet of the season.
