Wellesley Fencing Posts Two Wins at Tufts Fall Invitational
MEDFORD, Mass. - Wellesley Fencing posted wins over Yeshiva University and host Tufts University at the Tufts Fall Invitational on Sunday. The Blue finished the event with a 2-1 record, falling only to Stevens Institute of Technology.
Against the Jumbos, Wellesley picked up a convincing 20-7 victory. The Blue notched matching 8-1 victories in the foil and epee competitions, before dropping a tight 5-4 decision in sabre. In foil, the Wellesley duo of Hannah Braaten (Concord, MA) and Samantha Kim (Westlake Village, CA) went a combined 6-0, allowing just one touch between their six opponents. Cate Yoon (Seoul, South Korea) also fenced well, going 2-1. In epee, Emily Johnson (Pittstown, NJ) and Annemarie Kocab (Farmington Hills, MI) each posted matching 3-0 records, while Ashley Paquin (Cumberland, RI) went 2-1 and Anne Benjamin (Fairfield, CT) won her only bout. Rounding out the match, Elizabeth Rowen (Santa Cruz, CA) led the Blue in sabre, going 2-1.
Wellesley also dominated the competition against Yeshiva, recording a 26-1 victory. Braaten, Yoon and Kim each went 3-0 in a 9-0 foil victory, while Rowen, Crystal Aiken (Eden, NC) and Zsofia Schweger (Budapest, Hungary) all went undefeated in a 9-0 sabre sweep. In epee, Johnson and Paquin posted 3-0 records.
Wrapping up the day's competition, Wellesley fell 17-10 to a tough squad from Stevens. The Blue won the foil competition 6-3, led by a 3-0 record from Braaten and a 2-1 mark from Kim. Wellesley fell in epee 6-3, with Johnson sporting an undefeated 3-0 record. The Blue dropped the sabre match, 8-1, with Rowen notching the only Wellesley victory.
The Blue will return to action on January 27, 2010 when they host Brandeis University at home at 7:00 pm.
