Block Nets Hat Trick in Wellesley's 6-0 Win Over Clark

WELLESLEY, MA – First-year Madeline Block (Saratoga, CA) scored three times as the Wellesley College field hockey team cruised to a 6-0 win over Clark University in a Tuesday afternoon New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match-up.

Block scored three straight goals for the Blue who outshot Clark 30-5 including holding a 17-2 advantage in the first half of play.

Wellesley took a 1-0 lead when Callie Lekas (Brewster, MA) scored unassisted at the 12 minute mark.  Lekas then helped the Blue stretch the lead to 2-0 when she found teammate Katie Sang (Cupertino, CA) who scored 21:29 into play.

With five minutes left in the first half, Block started her scoring streak with a goal off of a penalty corner.  At 34:52, she scored once more, this time on an assist from Sang that gave Wellesley a 4-0 lead at the half.

Opening play in the second period, Block needed 10 minutes and 12 seconds to record her third score and push the Wellesley lead to 5-0.  The goal was assisted by Sally Scudder (Delafield, WI).

Rounding out the scoring for the Blue, Kathryn Frett (Hallowell, ME) converted on a penalty corner to set the final score at 6-0 in favor of Wellesley.

Clark goalkeeper Kathryn Dawsey (Saratoga Springs, NY) had a busy night for the Cougars racking up 23 saves. 

The loss sets Clark’s record to 4-5 on the season and 0-2 in the NEWMAC.  Up next, Clark will travel to Anna Maria for a 7:00pm start on Thursday evening.

For Wellesley (6-2, 2-0 NEWMAC), Blocks three goals led all scorers.  Lekas finished with a goal and two assists while goalkeeper Emily Hewitt (Alexandria, VA) picked up three saves.
