Wellesley College Field Hockey Downs Gordon in Overtime

Box Score

WENHAM, Mass. – Gordon College junior goalkeeper Chyanne Wilson came up with 11 saves but the Fighting Scots fell just short of the Wellesley College Blue, 3-2, in overtime this afternoon in a non-conference tilt at the Brigham Athletic Complex in Wenham.

The Fighting Scots (3-4) fell behind after just 11:15 of play as Wellesley (4-1) freshman forward Kate Cushing (Danvers, MA) knocked home the games first goal on an assist from junior midfielder Katie Sang (Cupertino, CA).  The Scots answered just five minutes later as junior forward Abigail Walker scored her second goal of the season on an assist from sophomore Kristin Lewis to knot the score at 1-1 with 17:45 to play in the period.  Wellesley regained the lead, 2-1, with 15:56 to play as sophomore midfielder Molly Morrow (Bow, NH) scored on an assist from sophomore forward Callie Lekas (Brewster, Mass.).

The scoring continued in the first half as GC freshman defender Veronica Pierce helped the Scots keep pace with the Blue on an unassisted goal with 11:40 showing on the clock.  Wilson stopped seven shots in the period while Wellesley junior keeper Emily Hewitt (Alexandria, VA) made one save in the frame.  Despite chances for both sides in the waning minutes of the first half, the score would remain 2-2.

The second period saw several chances for both sides but the goalkeepers came up big on both ends of the field as Wilson made four saves in the frame to Hewitt’s two.  Neither side would net a goal in the second 35 minutes and overtime would be required to settle the score.  Less than five minutes into the overtime period Kathryn Frett struck a goal for the visitors to give the Blue the 3-2 win.

Wilson finished the match with 11 saves while Hewitt turned away three shots.

The Fighting Scots will travel to Beverly, Mass. on Saturday (Sept. 22) to take on North Shore rival Endicott College at 1:00 p.m.
