Wellesley College Field Hockey Downs MIT, 1-0

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Wellesley College field hockey team extended its winning streak to three following a 1-0 decision over MIT in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game on Tuesday afternoon. Emily Hewitt earned her seventh shutout of the season and third in as many games for the Blue, which improved to 9-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play. With the loss, the Engineers’ ledger lowered to 4-9 on the year and 1-4 in the NEWMAC.

Wellesley’s Sally Scudder registered the first shot of the game after seven minutes elapsed. Both sides withstood several charges to the net during a 13-minute defensive battle. The Blue maintained possession of the ball for the remainder of the frame as it notched three shots and two penalty corners before ending the deadlock with 5:02 on the clock. Callie Lekas redirected a feed from Katie Sang at the top of the arc for her 14th goal and fourth game-winning tally of the year.

Wellesley carried the momentum into the second stanza, receiving a penalty corner within the first minute of play. The Blue nearly added an insurance goal on Kate Cushing’s shot off the corner, but a diving defensive save by Katie Boothe kept MIT within striking distance. The Engineers had a chance to post the equalizer on Cristina Stefanescu’s strike from the top of the circle, but Hewitt kicked the ball away for her only save of the game.

Wellesley recorded an 11-1 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge in penalty corners. In net for MIT, Alexa Herman collected seven saves.

Both teams will continue NEWMAC play on Saturday, October 13. MIT will travel to Babson College while Wellesley will host WPI.
