Wellesley College Field Hockey Edges Mount Holyoke, 1-0 in Overtime

Box Score

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 22, 2007) – First year midfielder Kate Cushing (Danvers, Mass./Pingree) found the cage for the winner in the first minute of overtime, as the Wellesley College field hockey team edged Mount Holyoke College 1-0 this afternoon at the Mount Holyoke Turf Field. It was the first New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference match for both squads.

Both teams went scoreless during regulation, sending the contest to overtime. Just 30 seconds into the extra period, Cushing took a feed from sophomore forward Callie Lekas (Brewster, Mass./Bancroft School) on a breakaway and beat Lyons junior goalkeeper Allie Walsh (Ann Arbor, Mich./Green Hills) for the game’s lone goal.

In an evenly played contest, the Blue owned a 24-22 edge in the shot column but had eight less (12-4) penalty corner opportunities than Mount Holyoke.

Junior Emily Hewitt (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens & St. Agnes) made four saves en route to earning the shutout between the pipes for Wellesley. Walsh stopped seven shots in a losing effort for the hosts.

Mount Holyoke (3-2, 0-1 NEWMAC) will round out its five game homestand on Wednesday, when it hosts Amherst College in a non-league match beginning at 7:00 p.m. Wellesley (5-1, 1-0 NEWMAC) will also return to action on Wednesday, as it travels to Connecticut College for an out-of-conference clash at 4:30 p.m.
