Wellesley College Field Hockey Downs Smith

WELLESLEY, MA - Callie Lekas (Brewster, MA) netted a hat trick as the Wellesley College field hockey team defeated New England Women's and Men's and Women's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Smith 5-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Lekas opened scoring for Wellesley in the first half with a goal seven minutes into the contest.  Ten minutes later, Kathryn Frett (Hallowell, ME) scored to push the Wellesley lead to 2-0 where it would stay at the end of the half.

Lekas notched two more goals in the second half while Catherine Marchetta (Princeton, NJ) also added a goal and an assist in the 5-0 win.

In goal for the Pioneers, first year Courtney Murphy made nine stops while Emily Hewitt (Alexandria, VA) saved three for Wellesley.

With the loss, Smith dropped to 2-8 overall and 1-3 in NEWMAC play. The Pioneers will be back in action on Tuesday night when they host Mount Holyoke College at 7 pm.

The win improves the Blue to 8-3 overall and 3-0 in the NEWMAC. Wellesley will be back in action on Tuesday, October 9 at 4 pm.
