Wellesley College Field Hockey Defeats Tufts in Overtime

Box Score

WELLESLEY, MA – First-year Kate Cushing (Danvers, MA) scored twice, including the game-winner in overtime as the Wellesley College field hockey team defeated Tufts University by a score of 3-2.

Wellesley got on the board first when Callie Lekas (Brewster, MA) scored off of a Katie Sang (Cupertino, CA) assist just over one-minute in to the game.  However, Tufts answered back with a goal by Michelle Kelly in the seventh minute that knotted the score at 1-1.

The Jumbos controlled the rest of the first half, taking the lead in the 17th minute when Brittany Holiday scored on an assist from Tess Jasinski.  Tufts would continue to dominate the period, launching 14 shots to Wellesley’s five but Blue goalkeeper Emily Hewitt (Alexandria, VA) saved seven shots in the half, keeping the score 2-1 in favor of Tufts.

After nearly 30 minutes of scoreless field hockey in the second half, Cushing scored off of another Sang assist to tie the score at 2-2 with five minutes to play.  The Jumbos then controlled play, picking up five penalty corners in the final five minutes, but Wellesley played tight defense and sent the game into overtime.

In overtime, Cushing scored the game-winner at 78:20 off of an assist from Lekas after the Blue converted on a penalty corner.

For the Jumbos (1-1) Katie Hyder picked up five saves while Wellesley’s Hewitt finished with 12 stops including four in the overtime period.

Wellesley (1-1) is idle until Saturday when the Blue compete in the Seven Sisters Tournament at Mount Holyoke College.
