Scudder Scores Twice in Wellesley Field Hockey Win Over Wheaton
Box Score
WELLESLEY, MA – Wellesley College first-year Sally Scudder (Delafield, WI) scored the first two goals of her collegiate career as the Blue downed Wheaton College 2-0 in a key New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match-up on Tuesday afternoon.
Wellesley dominated the first half of play, out-shooting Wheaton 8-1. However, Lyons’ keeper Cameron Abel came up big with five saves and the game went to the half knotted in a scoreless tie.
After over 53 minutes of scoreless field hockey, Scudder gave Wellesley a 1-0 lead on an assist from Callie Lekas (Brewster, MA) following a Blue penalty corner. Just over 14 minutes later, Madeline Block (Saratoga, CA) launched a cross to Lekas who once again found Scudder open and Wellesley increased the lead to 2-0.
Wheaton turned on the pressure over the remaining two minutes of the contest but Wellesley keeper Emily Hewitt (Alexandria, VA) was able to fend off each attempt and the Blue took the game 2-0.
For Wheaton, Abel finished with nine saves. The loss drops the Lyons to 10-4 overall and 4-2 in NEWMAC play. They will next travel to Mount Holyoke on October 20th for a 1:00 match.
Hewitt finished with three saves for the Blue who stay unbeaten in NEWMAC competition and improve their overall record to 11-3 on the season. Wellesley will be back in action on Saturday at Springfield College at 10:30am.
