Wellesley College Swimming & Diving Downs Mount Holyoke

WELLESLEY, Mass. --  The Wellesley College swimming and diving team defeated Mount Holyoke College 164-104 in dual meet action on Senior Day at Chandler Pool.  The win improves the Blue to 5-3 while the Lyons fall to 2-4 on the year.

Before the meet, Wellesley honored the five members of the class of 2009.  Katie Guynn (Salem, VA), Savanna Johnson (Bloomington, IN), Kate "Sprout" Sorenson (Bolton, MA), Elise Spedden (Clarksville, MD) and Stepheny Xiang (Wellesley, MA) led the Blue to a combined dual meet record of 26-7 during the tenure while also winning four straight Seven Sisters Championships.

Xiang made the most of her last home meet with three individual swimming wins, while Sorenson had record-breaking performances in the diving events.  Xiang's wins came in the 100-back and the 200-IM where she took first with times of 1:04.71 and 2:25.20 respectively.  Sorenson had an amazing effort on the diving events with a 294.76 in the 1-meter and a 300.00 in the 3-meter.  Both scores were Wellesley school records and also hit NCAA qualifying marks.

In other action, first-year Sabrina Maisel (Los Altos, CA) picked up two wins for the Blue while Emilie Mitten (Norwalk, CT), Stephanie Welch (Dedham, MA), and Olivia Hulme (Alma, MI) all notched first-place finishes.

Maisel won both the breaststroke events, taking the 100 in 1:14.45 and the 200 in 2:40.02. while Mitten was a winner in the 1650 free in 19:16.37. Elsewhere, Welch took first in the 200-fly in 2:27.59 and Hulme won the 100-fly in 1:06.32.

Wellesley also got a relay win from the team of Spedden, Maisel, Hulme and Dana Dutton (Anacortes, WA) who won the 200-medley in 2:01.40.

Mount Holyoke got two individual wins from Lydia Bowers who won the 50-free in 26.27 and the 100-free in a time of 56.80. Lindsay Schonborn, who finished second to Bowers in the 50-free, notched a first-place finish in the 200-free in 2:06.78.  Bowers and Schonborn were also part of the winning 200-freestyle relay along with teammates Lisa Nash and Mary Kate Miller, who combined for a time of 1:46.06. 

Mount Holyoke will return to the pool on Wednesday at 7:00pm at Trinity College. The Lyons will face the hosts as well as Elms College in a tri-meet. Wellesley is idle until Saturday when the Blue travel to Bates College to face Bates and Conn at 1:00pm.
