Sorenson Highlights Day One of NEWMAC Swimming and Diving

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Wellesley diver Kate Sorenson (Bolton, MA) took first place on the 1-meter board to highlight the Blue's day one action at the 2009 NEWMAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championship.  Wellesley currently sits in fifth place overall, with six events completed. Sprout

Sorenson, a senior, sailed through the preliminary round with a score of 488.80 to give her the top seed going into the evening's final.  In the championship round, she posted a career-best score of 497.20, surpassing the NCAA "A" consideration marks as well as setting a new Wellesley school record.  Sorenson bested her nearest competitor on the event by 45 points and walked away with her first NEWMAC title.

Wellesley also saw several solid performances on the swimming side.  In the 200-Free Relay, the team of senior Katie Guynn (Salem, VA), first-year Whitney Smith (Detroit, MI), junior Emilie Mitten (Norwalk, CT) and sophomore Dana Dutton (Anacortes, WA) turned in an eighth-place performance, shaving over two seconds off of their preliminary time to finish in 1:43.25.

The Blue also turned in an eighth-place performance in the 400-Medley Relay.  Senior Stepheny Xiang (Wellesley, MA), first-years Sabrina Maisel (Los Altos, CA) and Olivia Hulme (Alma, MI) and Dutton combined to swim a 4:17.26, also taking two seconds off of their preliminary time.

Individually, Dutton made the finals in the 50-Free, taking eighth place overall in 24.77. Xiang picked up a 10th place finish in the 200-IM, swimming a 2:16.49, while Mitten took 14th in the 500-Freestyle in 5:25.37.

The championship will resume tomorrow morning at 11:00am with preliminaries of the 200 Medley Relay, the 400 IM, the 100 Fly, the 200 Free, the 100 Breast and the 100 Back.  Event finals will begin at 6:30pm.
