Wellesley Competes at NEWMAC Swimming and Diving

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Two seventh-place relay performances paced Wellesley on day two of the 2009 NEWMAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championship. After 12 events, the Blue are tied for fifth place in team scoring with Clark University. Both teams have 182 total points, and sit behind Springfield (586), MIT (485), Wheaton (439.5), and Coast Guard (303).
In the 200-medley relay, the Wellesley team of Stepheny Xiang (Wellesley, MA), Sabrina Maisel (Los Altos, CA), Alex Stark (Moorestown, NJ) and Katie Guynn (Salem, VA) notched a seventh place finish in a time of 1:56.84. The Blue took nearly seven seconds off of their preliminary time.
In the other relay of the evening, the Blue again placed seventh. This time, Wellesley shaved almost 10 seconds from their preliminary number with the team of Xiang, Laura Weir (Narberth, PA), Emilie Mitten (Norwalk, CT) and Dana Dutton (Anacortes, WA) finishing in 8:15.02.
Other Wellesley action on the evening saw Xiang make the finals of the 100-back. The senior placed eighth overall in 1:01.60. Also in the 100-back, sophomore Allie Williams (River Forest, IL) took 15th in 1:05.06 while senior Elise Spedden (Clarksville, MD) placed 16th in 1:05.56.
Maisel continued a solid showing at her first conference championship with a 10th place finish in the 100-Breast, swimming a 1:11.89. In the 400-IM, first-year Stephanie Welch (Dedham, MA) took 11th overall in 5:06.04 while junior Laura Foley (Holden, MA) placed 15th in 5:14.96.
Rounding out the evening's action, Mitten took 15th in the 200-free in 2:03.07.
The championship wrap up tomorrow with preliminaries beginning at 11:00am and finals starting at 6:30pm.
