Sorenson Named Diver of the Year as Blue Finish 6th at NEWMAC Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Wellesley senior Kate Sorenson (Bolton, MA) earned NEWMAC Diver of the Year honors to lead the Blue to a sixth-place finish at the 2009 NEWMAC Swimming and Diving Championships.
Sorenson completed a sweep of the meet's diving events, scoring a 518.90 on the three-meter board to take top honors. Her three-meter performance, combined with her first-place score of
497.20 on the one-meter event, cemented her Diver of the Year status. Sorenson's title is the first in school history for Wellesley.
The Blue also turned in several solid performances on the swimming side to wrap up this evening's competition. Swimming the 1650-Free, junior Emilie Mitten (Norwalk, CT) placed 14th overall ina time of 18:47.48. In the 200-Back, senior Stepheny Xiang (Wellesley, MA) advanced to the "A" final, finishing eighth overall in a time of 2:15.53. Also in the 200-Back, first-year Erika Buckle (Boxborough, MA) won the "B" final in 2:17.12.
Wellesley also had two scorers in both the 200-Breast and the 200-Fly. In the 200-Breast, first-year Sabrina Maisel (Los Altos, CA) placed 12th overall in 2:36.38 while classmate Buckle took 15th in 2:40.24. Swimming the 200-Fly, junior Alex Stark (Moorestown, NJ) placed 12th in 2:24.43 while sophomore Alex Cahill (Hopkinton, MA) finished 16th in 2:27.21.
The Blue closed out the Championship with a solid showing from the 400-Free Relay team. Sophomore Dana Dutton (Anacortes, WA), junior Laura Weir (Narberth, PA) and seniors Katie Guynn (Salem, VA) and Xiang advanced to the event finals, taking seventh place overall in 3:45.50.
Wellesley finished the three-day meet with 259 total points. Springfield took top honors, once again, with 872.5 points.
