Wellesley College Swimming & Diving Defeats Simmons

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College first-years Erika Buckle (Boxborough, MA), Whitney Smith (Detroit, MI), Olivia Hulme (Alma, MI), Melanie Kaplan (La Jolla, CA) and Stephanie Welch (Dedham, MA) all picked up victories as the swimming and diving team defeated Simmons, 167-121, on Friday night at Chandler Pool.  The win improves Wellesley to 2-1 on the season while Simmons evened their record at 2-2.

For the Blue, Buckle picked up three wins on the night, taking first place in the 50-Breast (35.21), the 200-Back (2:22.39) and the 200-IM (2:25.67).  Smith was a double-winner, picking up back-to-back victories in the 50-Free (27.26) and the 100-Free (59.05).  Rounding out the top individual swimming efforts for the Blue, Hulme won the 50-Fly in 29.71, Welch took top honors in the 1000-Free in 11:39.96 and Kaplan was first in the 200-Free in 2:10.59.

Wellesley also picked up a win in the 200-Free Relay with the team of Tara Siegel (Sacramento, CA), Elise Spedden (Clarksville, MD), Katie Guynn (Salem, VA) and Dana Dutton (Anacortes, WA) taking first in 1:50.41. 

Rounding out the scoring for the Blue, senior diver Kate Sorensen (Bolton, MA) continued her impressive 2008-09 campaign with another sweep of the diving events.   On the 1-meter board, she finished with a 278.25 while taking first on the 3-meter in 283.87.  Both scores surpassed the NCAA qualifying standards.

For the Sharks, Keri-Ann Arsenault (Chester, NH), Erica Boswell (Salem, MA), Julia Herman (Cortlandt Manor, NY), Brittany Torelli (Waterbury, CT) and Caitlin Uriciuoli (Wethersfield, CT) all picked up victories.  Boswell, Herman, Torelli and Uriciuoli won the 400-Medley Relay in a time of 4:38.26 while individually, Arsenault was a winner in the 500-Free (5:42.88), Torelli won the 200-Breast (2:45.89) and Urciuoli took first in the 200-Fly (2:29.59).

Wellesley returns action on Wednesday, December 3rd at 7:00pm.  Blue Swimming will be at Tufts University while the diving events will be held at Wellesley.  Simmons hits the pool again at Babson on December 2nd at 6:00pm.
