Wellesley College Swimming & Diving Falls to MIT

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The Wellesley College swimming and diving team defeated Smith College by a score of 159-132 on Saturday afternoon in Northampton. The win improves Wellesley to 4-3 in dual meets on the year while Smith drops to 2-3.
Wellesley was led by Dana Dutton (Anacortes, WA), Sabrina Maisel (Los Altos, CA) and Kate Sorenson (Bolton, MA) who each picked up two individual wins. Dutton won two freestyle events, taking first in the 50-free in a time of 26.01 and won the 100-free in 58.71. Maisel won both the individual breaststroke events, swimming a 1:16.11 in the 100-yard and a 2:42.90 in the 200-yard event.
Also on the swimming side, Emilie Mitten (Norwalk, CT) and Melanie Kaplan (La Jolla, CA) each picked up first place finishes. Mitten won the 500-free in a time of 5:37.50 while Kaplan picked up her first individual victory of the year with a time of 11:56.29 in the 1000-free.
In the diving portion of the meet, Wellesley's Sorenson took home first place in the 1-meter and 3-meter with scores of 273.70 and 273.65 respectively. For the Pioneers, Alexis Roehrich (Eau Claire, WI) took home second place in both events with a score of 207.40 in the 1-meter and 239.90 in the 3-meter.
In the losing effort, Smith received stand out performances from several athletes. Lily Seidman (Westfield, IN) led the way with three first place finishes in the 100 yard butterfly (1:02.89), 200 yard butterfly (2:18.73), and the 200 yard IM (2:21.11). Lenora Walter (Santa Ynez, CA) finished with first place victories in the 100 yard backstroke (1:04.84) and the 200 yard backstroke (2:19.34). Teammate Christine Dzialo (Belchertown, MA) took home first place in the 200 yard free (2:05.92), second place in the 500 yard free (5:45.43), and third place in the 50 free (27.04).
Both Wellesley and Smith return to action January 24-25th as they travel to Vassar for the Seven Sisters Championship. The Blue will look to defend their title and have won 11-straight championships.
