Wellesley Tennis Falls to #3 Amherst College

WELLESLEY, Mass. –  The Wellesley College tennis team dropped a 8-1 decision to visiting Amherst College on Saturday afternoon at Wellesley. Amherst, ranked #3 in the country, improves to 12-1 on the season, while #8 Wellesley finishes the regular season at 19-4.

Amhest swept the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. For Wellesley, the closest match came at third singles where the team of Shivani Saxena (Milan, Italy) and Jacqueline Shen (Calgary, Alberta, CA) took the set into the tiebraker, falling 9-8(3).

In the singles matches, Amherst took five out of six decisions to seal the 8-1 win.  Picking up the lone win for Wellesley was Meghan Stubblebine (Cumming, GA) who picked up an easy 6-3, 6-3 win over Monica Snyder at third singles. Wellesley's Trish Devine (Westport, MA) took her fourth-flight match into three sets before falling to Laken King while Saxena also played three sets before bowing to Natasha Brown, 6-1, 5-7, 10-4.

Today's match was the final home match for Wellesley College seniors Trish Devine, Jenny Kendall, Jenna Mezin and Hali Walther.  The class of 2008 will graduate as the most successful class in Wellesley Tennis history, compiling a four-year record of 78-11. Under their direction, Wellesley has won the past four New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Championships as well as the last four Seven Sisters titles.

Wellesley will now await pairings for the 2008 NCAA National Championship Tournament which begins on May 2.
