Wellesley Tennis Sweeps Smith College
NORTHAMPTON, MA – The Wellesley College tennis team opened the 2008 season with a 9-0 defeat over Smith College on Saturday afternoon in Northampton. The Blue didn't lose a set in the New England Women's and Men's Athletics Conference (NEWMAC) win.
Head Coach Brian Kuscher picked up his first victory at the helm of the Blue, who have now won 37-straight NEWMAC matches.
Wellesley first-year's Maria Watanabe (Houston, TX) and Grace Cheng (Columbia, MD) made the most out of their collegiate debut. Watanabe was a double winner, taking the #1 singles match 6-1 and 6-1 while also teaming up with Cheng to win their second doubles match, 8-3. Jennifer Schwarzkopf (Hinsdale, IL) picked up wins at number two singles (6-1, 6-0) and number one doubles with partner Mohona Siddique (Chevy Chase, MD), 8-1.
Shivani Saxena (Milan, Italy) and Jacqueline Shen (Calgary, Alberta, CA) teamed up at number three doubles for an 8-2 win and also won their singles matches while Nathalie Herman (San Francisco, CA) picked up a 6-1, 6-2 singles win.
Wellesley is off until Saturday, September 20 when the Blue travel to Clark University for a 1:00pm match.
