Wellesley Tennis Falls to Williams College

WELLESLEY, MA –  The Wellesley College tennis team fell to Williams College 5-0 in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

Williams picked up the early 3-0 advantage with a sweep of the doubles matches.  At third doubles, Shivani Saxena and Jacqueline Shen dropped a close match, 8-5.

Although Jenna Mezin picked up a win in her first set, 6-1, Williams got wins at number two and number four to seal the win.  At the time play was halted, Meghan Stubblebine was battling back in the second set of her match with a 4-4 score.

Wellesley finished the spring ranked eighth in the country in Division III and third in the region. The ranking is the lowest for a Wellesley team since the 1991 Blue held the seventh spot.

Wellesley tennis finished 2007-08 with a 20-5 record under head coach Christine Franek.  The team won the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship this season as well as the 2008 Seven Sisters Tournament Title, completing four-year sweeps of both honors.

Wellesley players Mezin and Hali Walther will move on to the doubles tournament in Saint Peter, Minn. May 13-15 while Mezin will also compete in the singles tournament.
