ACADEMIC JUSTIFICATION

Please explain your reasons for pursuing this course of study and its relevance to your work at Wellesley and to your future plans. Include topics like the relevance of language study to your major, study with specialists in your field of interest, research in preparation for a senior thesis, etc. Do not include the general importance of study abroad, or personal goals like getting to know your roots, traveling or exploring a new culture. You must also explain why none of the approved programs meet your particular needs. If you are seeking an exception to the language requirement, please provide information about what steps you will take to gain a basic knowledge of the predominant host country language and culture prior to your departure.

SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS

Along with your completed petition, you will need to supply the following documentation:

  1. Letter of support from the chair of your major department stating that s/he has reviewed the courses you have selected and will approve these for credit toward your major. Please use the form provided here. (Students with two majors will need a letter from the chair of each major department.)

    In the event that the program does not offer courses relevant to your major, you may provide a letter of support from your faculty advisor or class dean describing why the program you have selected is appropriate for your overall course of study.

  2. For programs involving language study, you will need to provide a letter of support from the relevant language department chair. Please use the attached form.
  3. An unofficial transcript or grade report (a Banner printout is acceptable).

 

SUBMISSION

Petitions are due January 30 for study abroad during the following academic year.
