  • David Ferry Wins Library of Congress Poetry Prize
    December 12, 2000 -- David Ferry, Sophie Chantal Hart Professor Emeritus at Wellesley College, has been awarded the 2000 Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry for his book, Of No Country I Know: New and Selected Poems and Translations (The University of Chicago Press).
  • Writer Edwidge Danticat to Speak at Wellesley
    November 22, 2000 -- Called "a writer of a poetic imagination" by the Los Angeles Times, Edwidge Danticat, a Haitian-born author whose books have received both popular and literary recognition, will speak about her writing in a lecture in Jewett Auditorium on December 3 at 2:00 pm.
  • Wellesley Receives $14 Million Pledge for Global Education and Landscape Priorities
    November 13, 2000 -- Wellesley College announced today that it has received a pledge of $14 million to strengthen international experiences for its students and to restore part of the campus landscape. The commitment from the Shelby Cullom Davis Foundation augments its 1998 commitment of $11 million to support international scholarship and research, bringing the foundation's total campaign commitment to $25 million. This is the second $25 million commitment to "The Wellesley Campaign," a five-year initiative, which was publicly launched in July.
  • Wellesley Stages New England Premiere of Joan of Arc
    November 2, 2000 -- Joan of Arc is an intimate, powerful new musical which breaks through legend to bring the audience face to face with a living, breathing teenage girl. Set during the last year of Joan's life, the musical explores her strength, courage, visions and voices, and her final dark night of the soul. The show makes its New England premiere at Wellesley Wednesday, Nov. 8, with performances through the weekend.

    November 1, 2000 -- Nationally syndicated columnist, author, and political activist Arianna Huffington will deliver a talk titled 'Arianna's Call to Action: Revising our Democracy', Thursday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. in 277 Science Center on the Wellesley College campus.

    October 12, 2000 -- When the space shuttle Discovery blasted off October 11, Wellesley College had special reason to cheer. Pamela A. Melroy, an alumna from the class of 1983 and the third US woman in the history of NASA to pilot the shuttle, was carrying a blue Wellesley pennant as a memento.

    September 18, 2000 -- Two renowned poets and former Wellesley College professors, David Ferry and Robert Pinsky, the 39th Poet Laureate of the United States, will read from their works at Wellesley College on Sunday, September 24. The special "Afternoon of Poetry" will be held in Jewett Auditorium as part of the College's 125th anniversary celebrations.
  • Researchers Use Economic Analysis To Predict Olympic Medal Counts and Determine Athlete Participation
    September 14, 2000 -- Even before the Olympic torch has been lit in Sydney, researchers at Wellesley College have predicted the number of gold, silver, and bronze medals that will be won by each participating nation. Their economic analysis reveals that size, colonial heritage, and political structure all affect the ability of nations to send athletes and to win medals.
  • Noted AIDS Researcher Luc Montagnier to Speak at Wellesley
    September 12, 2000--Dr. Luc Montagnier, one of the co-discoverers of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, will give a public lecture at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening, September 20, in Alumnae Hall on the Wellesley College campus. The title of Montagnier's talk is "AIDS and Beyond: The Challenge of the Emerging Chronic Diseases." The event is free and open to the public.

  • Three Awarded Katherine Malone Scholarships
    September 6, 2000 -- At today's Opening Convocation, three Wellesley College students were awarded Katharine Malone Scholarships for Academic Excellence in recognition for their academic achievement and commitment to the College community. The Malone prizes were established in 1985 by Wellesley College alumna Claudine Malone in honor of her mother.

  • Wellesley College Receives $900,000 for Science Education
    August 7, 2000 -- Wellesley College has received $900,000 to enhance its programs in the sciences from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), the nation's largest private supporter of science education. Wellesley is among 53 colleges and universities nationwide to receive one of the four-year grants, which total $50.3 million.
