Connecting to Fileservers

To use network file servers such as NTM or Vault, you must log in to the domain using your domain account.

To learn how to use your domain account to connect to file servers (such as NTM), choose your Operating System from the list of those supported through the Computing Help Desk:

To learn how to use file servers to transfer files from one computer to another:

Connecting to file servers on Windows XP

1. From the Start menu, choose Run.

2. In the Open: field, type \\ followed by the name of the server to which you want to connect (e.g., \\ntm  or \\vault). Then click OK.

3. If the "Connect to" window appears. In the User name field, type wellesley\ followed by your domain user name (e.g., wellesley\myuserna).

4. In the Password field, type your domain password. Click OK. Note: To preserve the security of your account, do not check Remember my password.

Connecting to file servers in Vista

1. In the Start menu, type \\ followed by the name of the server to which you want to connect (e.g., \\ntm or \\vault) in the search box and press Enter. If you are trying to connect to NTM and you receive an error message after entering your Domain Account information, try using \\ntm.wellesley.edu or \\149.130.13.186 instead of \\ntm. If this address also fails to get you into NTM, please contact the Computing Help Desk.

2. The Connect to window will appear. In the User name field, type wellesley\ followed by your domain user name (e.g., wellesley\wwellesl); in the Password field, type your domain password. Click OK. To preserve the security of your account, do not check Remember my password.

Connecting to file servers in Windows 7

To connect to a Windows file server such as NTM or Vault:

1. In the Start menu, type \\ followed by the name of the server to which you want to connect (e.g., \\ntm, \\vault) in the search box and press Enter. If you are trying to connect to NTM and you receive an error message after entering your Domain Account information, try using \\ntm.wellesley.edu or \\149.130.13.186 instead of \\ntm. If this address also fails to get you into NTM, please contact the Computing Help Desk.

2. The Connect to window will appear. In the User name field, type wellesley\ followed by your domain user name (e.g., wellesley\wwellesl); in the Password field, type your domain password. Click OK. To preserve the security of your account, do not check Remember my password.

 

Transferring files using file servers

For Students:

Students can use Move_It to transfer academic files from one computer to another and to share academic files with faculty.
 
Move_It can be accessed from both Macintosh and Windows computers.
 
All content in this folder will be automatically deleted 2 hours after posting and is accessible to all students and members of the faculty.  Do not leave confidential files or files not saved in another location (your computer hard drive, CD, thumb drive, etc.) in Move_It.
 
All files copied to Move_It are automatically tagged with an individual's domain name and posting time. Editing the files in Move_It will not change the posting time.

Known violations of these policies will result in the removal of the files and the poster's loss of access to Move_It.

To connect to Move_It, follow the instructions for connecting to NTM and then choose the Move_It folder. If you have any problems connecting to or using Move_It, please contact the Help Desk at x7777.

For Faculty/Staff:

Faculty and staff have access to the FacStaffDrop folder available on NTM, accessible on both Macintosh and Windows computers. Faculty and staff can use FacStaffDrop to transfer files from one computer to another and to share academic files with other faculty and staff.
 
All content is accessible to all members of the faculty and staff. Do not leave confidential files or files not saved in another location (your computer hard drive, CD, thumb drive, etc.) in FacStaffDrop. Files left on FacStaffDrop will be deleted after 24 hours.

To connect to FacStaffDrop, follow the instructions for connecting to NTM and then choose the FacStaffDrop folder. If you have any problems connecting to or using FacStaffDrop, please contact the Help Desk at x3333.
