THIRTEEN WELLESLEY STUDENT-ATHLETES EARN SPRING NEWMAC ACADEMIC ALL-CONFERENCE

WELLESLEY, Mass. –   Thirteen Wellesley College student-athletes were named to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Spring Academic All-Conference team.
 
Eight student-athletes representing Wellesley’s crew team, including seniors Erzsi Szilagyi (Kingwood, W.Va.), Marthine Satris (Bolinas, Calif.) and Jane Whitney (Wayland, Mass.) were among those to receive the award. Szilagyi is a three-time NEWMAC Academic All-Conference honoree while Satris has earned the accolade twice during her career.
 
Five members of Wellesley’s lacrosse team also earned NEWMAC Academic All-Conference honors. Sophomore Audrey Gill (Exeter, N.H.), a first-time NEWMAC Academic All-Conference selection, was Wellesley’s fourth-leading scorer in 2004 netting 10 goals and passing off six assists.  Four lacrosse senior student-athletes rounded out the honorees for Wellesley, including all-conference selections Laura Bender (Mattapoisett, Mass.) and Katie Bedard (East Longmeadow, Mass.). Bender, a first-team NEWMAC All-Conference selection, led the Blue in scoring with 30 goals and seven assists while Bedard anchored Wellesley’s defense in a breakout season to earn NEWMAC All-Conference honorable mention honors.
 
Honorees must have met the following criteria: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale after the 2003 Fall semester, achieved second year academic status at his or her institution, and been a member of a varsity team for the entire season.
 
Spring sports sponsored by the NEWMAC include men’s and women’s track and field, women’s lacrosee, men’s tennis, baseball, softball and women’s rowing.
 
The NEWMAC Consists of ten highly selective institutions committed to academic excellence: Babson College, Clark University, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, Springfield College, Wellesley College and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
