Strength and Conditioning Coach - Sandy Kerr

Sandy Kerr is in her sixth year as Strength and Conditioning Coach at Wellesley and has also taught strength training PE for two years at the college.   Kerr is a Massachusetts Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant and is also an AFAA Certified Personal Trainer.   The Natick, MA native is also an active member of the Sports Medicine Committee here at Wellesley.

Sandy is available for strength training instruction for Wellesley students and faculty on Tuesdays and Thursdays between the hours of 12:00 and 4:00 pm.

Exercise Machine Room

The exercise machine room has 15 Cybex machines, allowing for comprehensive weight training work outs. It is located in the lower level of the Sports Center. The exercise machine room has 15 Cybex Machines, allowing for total body workouts. Trained staff are available to assist with use of all machines. Training logs are also available and may be kept on file in the facility.

Q: When is the weight room open?
A: The weight room is open in the morning, at lunch time and in the evening. .

Q: What kind of equipment is available?
A: Cybex Eagle equipment is available. This is a full circut system that works all the major muscle groups. There are also dumbells, exercise balls and a stretch mat available. The adjacent weight room has benches, a smith machine, dual adjustable pulley, and dumbells.

Q: Do I have to be an athlete to use the weight rooms?
A: No, the weight rooms are open to everyone.

Q: Who will show me what to do if I have never used the equipment before?
A: The weight room monitors have been trained on how to use the equipment. They will show you how each piece works and how to adjust it to accommodate your individual needs. Each piece of equipment also has written instructions on it that you can refer to. Think safety, ask questions.

Q: How do I get a job in the weight room?
A: Student monitors are required to have CPR training. If you have a current CPR card and are interested in working in the weight room, contact Martha Dietrick, KSC Facilities Manager at x 2023. Training is provided.

Q: Is the equipment designed for women?
A: The Cybex/Eagle equipment is designed to fit users from 5'2" to 6'4". Some of the equipment has extra pads for additional flexibility in meeting all sizes of people.

Q: May I bring a guest to the weight room?
A: Yes, as long as you pay the guest fee at the front desk and give the reciept to the weight room monitor.

Q: Where is the weight room?
A: The weight room is located in the lower level of the KSC.

Q: May I check out dumbbells for use in my dorm room?
A: Unfortunately, the equipment must stay in the facility.

Q: How do I keep track of my progress?
A: There are pink training diaries available in the weight room for you to track your work outs. You may file it in the weight room so it is there each time you come in.

Q: Do I need to wear anything special to work out?
A:Appropriate footwear is required and we ask that you don't wear your street shoes in the weight room. Please bring a spare pair to put on before entering the room. This helps to keep the room clean and free of sand that can damage the equipment.

Q: What should I do if I want to learn more?
A: Take a PE Strength and Conditioning course. Check out the PE schedule on the CWIS.

Cardiovascular Room

The Cardiovascular equipment is available for vigorous workouts. The equipment is located in the fieldhouse. Equipment includes stationery bicycles, stairmasters, treadmills and elliptical trainers. The CV machines provide equipment for heart pounding workouts. The CV machines are available whenever the building is open.

Q: What types of equipment are available?
A: There are four Life Stride treadmills, five StairMasters, on upright Lifecycle, and three recumbent Lifecycles. In addition, there are two elliptical trainers.

Q: How do I use the equipment safely?
A: All of the equipment has information on the proper and safe operation. Please read this information before using any of the equipment.

Q: When is this equipment available for use?
A: The Cardio Corners are available whenever the KSC is open. That means from 7am to 10pm Monday through Friday, 10am to 6pm on Saturday and 12pm to 6pm on Sunday. You may check the schedule on the CWIS.

Q: What should I do if something breaks while I am using it?
A: Please notify the front desk right away so we can get the equipment fixed and back on line.

Q: How do I clean the equipment when i am finished with my workout?
A: There is a towel and germicide in the Cardio Corner area. Please wipe down the equipment with the germicide and towel.The towels ae replaced twice a day. Your help with this is appreciated by the staff and the next user.

Q: Where are the Cardio Corners?
A: The Cardio Corners are located in the Field House of the KSC. There is one in the north corner and one in the south corner of the building. The Field House is to your left as you face the KSC front desk.

Q: What do I do if all the equipment is being used when I get there?
A: There is a write-on wipe-off board located in the north Cardio Corner area (where the StairMasters are). Write your name under the piece of equipment you are waiting for. Erase your name when your turn comes. For everyone's benefit, workouts are to be limited to 20 minutes maximum when people are waiting.
