Swimming & Diving-Chandler Pool
Emergency Personnel for Contests:
Lifeguard & certified athletic trainer on duty. Event manager, athletic training aide, head & assistant coach may be called to assist if needed.
Emergency Personnel for Practices:
The coaches are the designated first responders for any emergency. A certified athletic trainer is available by phone during normal regular season practice hours (x2388). If practice is conducted when AT is not present (i.e. non-traditional season, morning practices) the coach is the designated first responder.
Emergency Communication
“Red Phone” on the pool deck. The receiver needs only to be knocked off the wall base to alert Campus Police of an emergency. The swim office phone may be used to call the athletic training room x2388, or Campus Police Emergency x5555 (who will directly contact EMS).
Emergency Equipment
Team medical kit on site. General pool first aid kit is in the swim office. Splints, crutches (on site for contests, available from athletic training room when AT staff is present). Spine boards available on pool deck, used by lifeguards for in-water emergencies. Other emergency equipment will be aboard the ambulance. Response time from call is approximately 4 minutes.
Role of First Responder
It is assumed that the most qualified person on site will assume care of the injured athlete until EMS arrives. This person will also designate and direct others in the first response team.
- Initiate care of injured or ill student-athlete or other victim.
- Emergency equipment retrieval by designated person.
- Activate EMS. Call Campus Police at x5555. State the number of injured persons, condition, treatment being given, specific directions to the scene.
Venue Directions:
Towne Fieldhouse is on Central Street, Rt. 135. Access to the venue is via the parking lot entrance at the west end of the fieldhouse. Drive around the fieldhouse, past the flag poles and turn right towards the pool emergency entrance where someone should be waiting to direct the ambulance.
Immediate Care of the Athlete:
Once the designated first responder (lifeguard, coach) recognizes that someone needs immediate help, they activate the emergency action plan.
During a Contest:
- The lifeguard alerts the other members of the emergency personnel by giving 3 whistle blasts indicating pool evacuation / clearing.
- Public address system announcement may be initiated to help clear the pool.
- The remaining lifeguard (if there are two) or the AT will be available to provide back-up coverage and/ or direct the other members of the emergency personnel what to do if necessary (see responsibilities).
- If the victim’s injury is not serious & EMS does not need to be called, the ATC on duty will make the recommendation to the coach on whether the person can or cannot return for competition.
- With a serious injury or death, notify the appropriate supervisor(s) as soon as possible & they will contact the appropriate college personnel (see campus procedures for handling emergencies from the Office of the Dean of Students Wellesley College).
- Do not give out any information about an injured person. Only management or a designated spokesperson should talk to the media or others about an incident.
- Follow up with a Staff debriefing (usually within 24 hours of an incident) to:
- Examine what happened.
- Assess the effectiveness of the EAP
- Consider new ways to prevent similar incidents in the future.
- Avoid assigning blame or criticizing everyone’s actions.
