Wellesley Basketball Downs Daniel Webster

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College basketball team picked up its first win of the 2007-08 season with a 50-38 victory over Daniel Webster in the consolation game of the Plymouth State Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday evening.
After the Eagles went up 2-0 to open the game, a three-pointer from Courtney Richter (Sinking Spring, PA) triggered a 15-2 Wellesley run to give the Blue a 15-4 lead with 10 minutes to play in the half. However, Daniel Webster scored nine unanswered points to narrow Wellesley’s lead to 15-13 with 4:56 remaining.
With 34 seconds in the half, the Eagles’ Brianna DeSeignora hit a jumper to give Daniel Webster an 18-17 lead. After a Wellesley turnover, Sarah Shea hit a three for the Eagles to send them into the locker room with a 21-17 lead.
To open the second half, Wellesley’s Jessica Duff (Milton, Abington, UK) cut the Daniel Webster lead to 21-19 with a layup. However, the Eagles pushed their lead to eight with a 31-23 advantage at 15:49 left in the game.
A three-pointer from the Blue’s Laura Barrett (Leicester, MA) cut the Eagle lead to 31-26 and sparked a string of eight unanswered points for Wellesley who tied the game at 31-31 with 11:36 to play.
Daniel Webster regained the lead with five minutes remaining in the game but a Julia Thomas (Concord, CA) lay-up with 4:41 to play gave the Blue a 35-33 lead which they’d hold on to, ending the game with a 15-5 run and a 50-38 win.
Duff led all scorers with 18 points and 16 boards and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Thomas finished with 13 points and six rebounds while Richter added seven points and seven boards.
The Blue (1-1) will return to action on Tuesday for their home opener against Brandeis at 7:00 pm.
