Wellesley College Basketball Drops Road Game to Rhode Island

Providence, RI--Rhode Island College sophomore forward Jen Knott finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 18
points and nine boards to lead the Anchorwomen past Wellesley, 68-46, at The Murray Center on Tuesday evening. RIC evens its record at 2-2, while the Blue fall to 1-3.
The Anchorwomen capitalized on 19 first-half Wellesley turnovers to build a commanding 30-point, 44-14, half-time advantage. The Blue could not find the basket in the first stanza, shooting just 19 percent (5-for-27). RIC shot just under 50 percent (15-for-31) and made 10-of-15 from the free throw line in the first half.
The game was never in doubt in the second half, despite the Blue hitting seven three-pointers and outscoring the Anchorwomen by eight, 32-24.
In addition to Knott, the Anchorwomen were led by senior forward Sherri Heard who logged 14 points and seven boards. Sophomore guard Alice Mullen posted 12 points, five boards and three steals to go along with an assist and a block. Senior point guard Sarah Coughlin logged a game-high seven assists. Junior guards Michelle McNamee and Tyla Martin chipped in with nine and eight points, respectively.
RIC held Wellesley junior forward Jessica Duff (Milton, Abingdon, UK), who came into the contest averaging a double-double, to just eight points and five boards in 17 minutes. Junior forward Julia Thomas (Concord, CA) posted a game-high 11 rebounds, while frontcourt classmate Courtney Richter (Sinking Springs, PA) led Wellesley with 10 points.
The Blue shot 28 percent (16-for-57) from the field in the game and finished with 27 turnovers. RIC shot 43 percent (26-for-60) from the floor.
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will open the Little East Conference slate at home against UMass Boston on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 1 p.m. The Blue will host Emerson on Dec. 1 at 2 p.m.
