Duff, Martore Lead Wellesley Past Roger Williams

Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Jessica Duff (Milton, Abingdon, UK) and Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA) each netted 10 points as the Wellesley College basketball team downed Roger Williams 43-41 on Thursday evening in Wellesley.

The Blue took a 4-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game off of baskets from Laura Barrett (Dobbs Ferry, NY) and Courtney Richter (Sinking Spring, PA).  At the 15-minute mark, Wellesley increased the lead to 10-2 after Martore scored six straight for the Blue.

A basket from Roger Williams’ Casey Anderson (Cohasset, MA) closed the lead to 12-9 with just under 13 minutes to play in the first half.  However, Wellesley built a 14-point lead by going on a 13-3 run over the next ten minutes of the game.

With the score 25-11 in favor of Wellesley, the Hawks took a time out to regroup.  After the break, Roger Williams scored six unanswered points to cut the lead to eight points but a lay-up from Richter gave Wellesley a 27-17 lead to take into the locker room.

In the second half, Wellesley brought the lead back up to 14 points at 33-19 with scores from Julia Thomas (Concord, CA), Richter and Duff.   The Hawks once again battled back, going on a 12-3 run to bring the Wellesley lead back down to 36-31 with nine minutes left in the game.

A three-pointer from Barrett and a lay-up from Duff brought the Blue lead to 41-31 with six minutes to play.  Roger Williams then rattled off eight unanswered points highlighted by an acrobatic lay-up from Carly Spagnola (Millbrook, NY) to cut the lead to 41-39 at the two minute mark.

Wellesley pushed the lead back up to four points when Martore’s basket made it 43-39 with :45 seconds to play.  A lay-up from the Hawk’s Caitlin McNabb (Springfield, MA) combined with a Wellesley turnover gave Roger Williams the ball, down by two points with :24 left to play.  However, the Wellesley defense forced the Hawks to throw up a desperation three that fell short and the Blue claimed the 43-41 win.

Roger Williams (3-3) was led by Anderson who finished the night with eight points and seven rebounds.  Jacqueline Criss (Westwood, MA) and Kate Malenczak (Sayville, NY) rounded out the scoring for the Hawks with seven points each.

The win improves Wellesley to 3-4 on the season.  The Blue, who led from start to finish for the first time this season, were led by Duff and Martore who each recorded 10 points.  Duff also added 10 boards for her fourth double-double of the season while Martore had seven rebounds.  Richter ended the game with nine points of her own while added a team-high eight boards.

Both Roger Williams and Wellesley will be back in action on Saturday.  The Hawks will play at Wheaton College at 1:00pm while Wellesley battles Tufts at home at 2:00 pm.
