Box Score

Worcester, MA --- Freshman Elle Fontaine (Franklin, MA) came off the bench to tally a team-best 16 points to help WPI to a hard-fought 56-46 victory over visiting Wellesley in NEWMAC women’s basketball action on Wednesday night.

With their third straight win, the Engineers up their record to 11-8 overall and 6-3 in conference play.  Wellesley slips to 5-12 on the season and 2-6 in the NEWMAC.

Fontaine started a 8-0 run with a jumper midway through the second half that turned a brief 36-35 Wellesley advantage into a lead the Engineers would not relinquish.  Fellow bench-mate Rachel Salvatori (Williston, VT) added to the spurt with four points, as on the night, the WPI reserves outscored its Wellesley counterparts by a 27-3 margin.

Senior guard Kate Maki (Fitchburg, MA) had a strong all-around night, scoring nine points to go along with six rebounds and a career-high six assists.  Point guard Natasha Deschene (Presque Isle, ME) hauled in a game-best seven rebounds for the Crimson and Gray while Kaileen Selen (Worcester, MA) responded to a tough night of shooting by adding three steals and three blocks to her eight points.

Jessica Duff (Milton, Abingdon, UK) paced the Blue offensively by leading all scorers with 17 points.  Julia Thomas (Concord, CA) aided the Wellesley effort with 10 points and six rebounds.  On the night, the visitors sported four players with five or more boards en route to enjoying a 38-31 edge on the glass.

Both teams return to the hardwood on Saturday.  WPI travels to Northampton for a 2pm match-up with Smith while Wellesley entertains Mount Holyoke at 7pm.
