Wellesley Basketball Downs Agnes Scott College at Seven Sisters Tournament
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Wellesley College basketball team cruised to a 78-43 win over Agnes Scott College in the final day of the Seven Sisters Tournament. The 35-point win marks the largest margin of victory for Wellesley since the Blue defeated conference-rival MIT, 75-37, on January 15, 2005.
Wellesley started strong, building a 42-19 lead by half time while shooting 52% from the field. The Blue were backed by a first-half double-double from senior Jessica Duff (Milton Abingdon, UK) (12 points, 10 rebounds) and eight points each from first-year Robyn Burleson (Seattle, WA) and senior Courtney Richter (Sinking Spring, PA).
The second half was much of the same with Wellesley never giving up less than a 23-point lead. Senior Julia Thomas (Concord, CA) contributed 10 second-half points while Richter dished out six assists in the period as the Blue grabbed the 78-43 victory.
Duff finished the game with 25 points and 13 rebounds, leading all players. Richter recorded 12 points and a career-high nine assists while Thomas, an All-Classic selection, finished with 12 points and six boards. First-years Burleson and KD Stearns (Eustis, FL) rounded out the Wellesley scoring with 11 and eight points, respectively.
Agnes Scott was led by Nikki Maples who finished the game with 15 points while Jennifer Russi added 10.
Wellesley (2-1) returns to action to face Brandeis University on Tuesday at 7:00pm. Agnes Scott (2-2) is idle until December 6th when they host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 2:00pm.
