WELLESLEY, Mass. - The Wellesley College basketball team will be taking part in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s (WBCA) “Pink Zone” initiative on Wednesday, February 18th.

The Blue will host Clark University in a 7:00 pm game that will also serve as a fundraiser for breast cancer research. Teams will be wearing pink shoelaces during the game and the Wellesley team will warm up in pink Wellesley Athletics t-shirts.

The primary focus of the WBCA’s “Pink Zone” is to raise awareness of breast cancer around the nation. All fans that attend the February 18th contest are asked to wear pink in support of the initiative. A donation is also suggested. This is the second year that Wellesley Athletics has participated in the event.

Funds raised will benefit the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. Proceeds will go to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, which was established under The V Foundation in December 2007. It honors the former North Carolina State University women’s coach, who worked alongside then men’s coach Jim Valvano before he succumbed to cancer in 1993. Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 and lost her battle with the disease on January 24.

Formerly known as “Think Pink”, the “Pink Zone” began as a WBCA initiative in 2007. Last year, over 1,200 teams and organizations participated, reaching more than 830,000 fans and raising over $930,000 for breast cancer awareness and research.
