Blue Basketball Falls to NEWMAC-Leading Babson
BABSON PARK, Mass. – Babson College opened the game with a 23-8 run and never looked back as the Beavers defeated cross-town rival Wellesley College, 71-44, in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference women’s basketball action at Babson’s Staake Gymnasium on Thursday night.
With the win, the Beavers extended their win streak to 11 games while improving to 19-3 overall and a perfect 15-0 in NEWMAC play. Wellesley saw its four-game win streak come to a halt as the Blue dipped to 8-12 overall and 6-9 in the conference.
Sophomore Nicki Wurdeman (Rowley, Mass.) led Babson with 24 points and six rebounds, while first-year Sarah Collins (Weymouth, Mass.) added 15 points, five boards, and four blocked shots. Sophomore Kathleen King (Framingham, Mass.) also had a big game with nine points, eight caroms, and four assists, and junior Damisi Adewumi (Bronx, N.Y.) chipped in with six points and three rebounds off the bench.
Wellesley was led by the first-year trio of Malia Mier (Torrance, Calif.), who scored 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, Becca Kimball (Weston, Mass.), who tossed in ten points and pulled down five rebounds and Ashleigh Sargent (Bedford, N.H.), who contributed nine points and five boards.
Babson’s 23-8 barrage to start the contest included a 10-0 spurt that turned a 7-5 lead into a 17-5 cushion with 13 minutes remaining in the opening half. Collins scored six straight points to start the burst, while Adewumi and King also added buckets. Collins would eventually enter the break with 10 points, while Adewumi and Wurdeman had six and five points at the half, respectively.
Sargent and Maier each scored seven points in the first half to pace Wellesley.
The Blue are back in action at home on Saturday. Wellesley hosts WPI in a 2:00pm match-up that will serve as a fundraiser for breast cancer research.
