Wellesley Downs Mount Holyoke, 55-42
WELLESLEY, Mass. - Led by Becca Kimball's (Weston, Mass.) 19 second-half points, Wellesley basketball defeated Mount Holyoke, 55-42, this afternoon at Keohane Sports Center. The win lifts the Blue to 6-11 overall, 4-8 in the NEWMAC. The Lyons fall to 6-13, 4-8 in the conference.
Mount Holyoke opened with an early 8-3 lead, capped off by a jumper from Christine Chancy (Bay Harbor Island, Fla.). The Blue rebounded with a 9-4 run, highlighted by two buckets from Katie Martore (Great Falls, Va.), to tie the score at 12-12 midway through the half. The Lyons inched back to a narrow lead, using back-to-back jumpers from Kate Shafir (Newton, Mass.) and a layup from Tricia Chase (Feeding Hills, Mass.), to take a 20-16 advantage with 4:27 remaining. But Wellesley closed the period with a 6-2 spurt, including two steals and a trey from Malia Maier (Torrance, Calif.) to send the teams to the locker room tied at 22-22.
The Lyons opened the second half with a 7-0 run, courtesy of two-pointers from Shafir and Erin Cain (Quincy, Mass) and a trey from Chancy. Wellesley answered with a run of its own, out-scoring the visitors 16-2 over an eight-minute period, as Kimball drained ten of her second-half points and Asleigh Sargent (Bedford, N.H.) added four. Mount Holyoke's Cain cut the lead to 37-33 with a jumper at the 9:32 mark, but that was as close as the visitors would get, as Wellesley cruised to a 55-42 win.
Mount Holyoke was led by Chancy's 11 points, while Chase tallied eight points and 11 rebounds. Both Chancy and Chase each added three assists. Rounding out the offense for the Lyons, Shafir picked up nine points and six rebounds, while Cain chipped in eight points.
Wellesley's Kimball led all scorers with 21 points. Sargent matched a career-high with 12 points, while Maier filled out the boxscore with eight points, seven steals, six rebounds and six assists. Also for the Blue, Martore scored seven points while KD Stearns (Eustis, FL) grabbed six rebounds.
Mount Holyoke returns to the court on Wednesday, February 3, at 7:00 p.m., when they host hrival Smith College. The Blue will also take the court on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., when they host the Coast Guard Academy Bears.
