Blue Crew Takes Second at 2009 NEWMAC Championships
Snedecor, Wakeman, Cooper Earn All-NEWMAC Honors
WORCESTER, Mass. – Aided by a first-place finish from the third varsity boat and second-place finishes from both the first and second varsity, the Wellesley College crew team earned a second-place overall finish at the 2009 NEWMAC Championships held Saturday at Lake Quinsigamond.
A margin of only eight points separated the 1-2-3 finishers for the Florence Jope Smith Cup, awarded to the team with the highest number of points in the overall competition. Smith recaptured the Cup after a two-year absence and won it for the seventh time overall. Wellesley took second with 24 points while Mount Holyoke finished third with 22 total points.
Wellesley opened the morning of racing with a fourth-place finish in the novice race. The Blue finished with a time of 7:58.74, behind Smith (1st), Mount Holyoke (2nd) and Coast Guard (3rd).
In the third varsity race, Wellesley continued its winning streak, taking first place overall. The Blue recorded a time of 7:32.80, almost 20 seconds faster than Mount Holyoke, who placed second, and Smith, who took third.
The Blue lost a photo finish in the second varsity race, taking second place overall, just .21 of a second behind Smith College. The Pioneers narrowly edged Wellesley with a time of 7:22.55, to the Blue's 7:22.76.
In the final race of the morning, Wellesley used a lightning-fast finish to take second in the first varsity race. The Blue fought off Mount Holyoke to finish second overall in a time of 7:13.97, behind only Smith.
The 2009 NEWMAC All-Conference women’s rowing varsity team was also announced at this year’s championships. Clark’s Kasia Baca and Katy Nowoswiat; Coast Guard’s Rory Keegan and Sarah Jane Otey; Mount Holyoke’s Sarah Gray and Mya Steadman; Smith’s Eliza van Lennep and Katharine von Herrmann; Wellesley’s Cori Snedecor and Gabby Wakeman; and WPI’s Steph Kavrakis and Katie Siering all earned the honor.
Amy Saba of Clark, Kelli Normoyle of Coast Guard, Hannah Blackmer of Mount Holyoke, Robin Spencer of Smith, Conisha Cooper of Wellesley and Vicky Stutz of WPI represented their respective institutions on the 2009 All-NEWMAC novice team.
