Wellesley Crew Races Tufts, Wesleyan, Bates at Malden River
MALDEN, Mass. – The Wellesley College crew team raced strong at Malden River on Saturday morning. The Blue competed against crews from Tufts University, Wesleyan University and Bates College.
Dealing with a late-week injury, the Wellesley first varsity boat competed in two races with a re-shuffled line-up. In the first race of the morning, the Blue fell to Wesleyan by just over three seconds. Wellesley posted a 7:07.59, while Wesleyan finished in 7:04.40. In the late race, Blue crew cruised to a convincing win over Tufts. Wellesley finished in 7:12.46, while Tufts came in 15 seconds later at 7:27.46.
Due to the line-up rearrangements, Wellesley rowers Shernaz Dossabhoy (Belmont, MA) and Hannah Dornbusch (Madison, WI) both competed in three races, one each with the varsity eight and two with the second varsity.
The Wellesley second varsity eight also split their races. The Blue got off to a slow start in the first race, falling to Bates College as the Bobcats finished in 7:03.93, while Wellesley came in at 7:17.55. In the second race, the Blue rebounded with a commanding 40-second victory over Wesleyan. Wellesley posted a 7:27.66 to Wesleyan's 8:07.88.
In the novice races, Wellesley's first boat split two races against Tufts while the second novice boat was 0-2 against Tufts. The first boat opened with a 7:48.18 to 7:56.16 victory over the Tufts "B" boat, and then dropped their second race to the Tufts "A" boat. The second boat lost two tough races, one to the Tufts "B" crew and the other to the Tufts second novice team.
Wellesley competes again on short rest, as Blue crew travels to Lake Quinsigamond tomorrow morning to take on WPI, Bates, Trinity and the University of Rochester.
