Wellesley Crew Competes at 2010 NCAA National Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Wellesley College crew team opened competition on day one of the 2010 NCAA Division III Rowing Championships.  The Blue competed strong in two early heats this morning, and then returned to the water for two qualifiers this afternoon.

The Blue varsity eight took third place in their opening heat, advancing to grand qualifier.  Wellesley (6:55.34) finished behind Ithaca College (6:48.63), who ran away with the heat, and St. Lawrence (6:55.19), who narrowly crossed the finish line before Wellesley.  The Blue defeated the Bates second boat (7:05.47), as well as the second boat from St. Lawrence (7:13.67).

In the grand qualifier, the varsity eight took fifth place in a time of 7:08.94. The Blue finished behind Williams (7:01.19), Trinity (7:04.93), Puget Sound (7:04.95) and St. Lawrence (7:06.06), while besting William Smith (7:13.98). The fifth place finish qualified the team for the petite final on Saturday at 11:15am PST.

Wellesley's second varsity eight took fourth place in their heat, to advance to petite qualifier.  The Blue (7:04.53) defeated the first varsity boat from Mary Washington (7:12.88) and the second boat from Puget Sound (7:21.47), while falling behind Bates (6:41.10), Williams' second boat (6:42.02) and Trinity (6:47.98).

In the petite qualifier, the Blue took fourth place out of seven boats. Wellesley finished in 7:18.31, just behind Bates (7:11.06), Ithaca (7:14.72) and Trinity (7:16.64), and ahead of Puget Sound (7:20.05), St. Lawrence (7:20.80) and Mary Washington (7:23.57). The 2V will now row in the third final on Saturday at 11:00am PST.

The first varsity boat was coxed by junior Hannah Woodruff (Londmeadow, MA) and was comprised of senior Kate Spelman (Scituate, MA), first-year Taylor Black (Harleysville, PA), senior Hannah Dornbusch (Madison, WI), junior Alena Gerlek (Anchorage, AK), first-year Caroline Dodge (Hanover, NH), junior Holly Jones (Duxbury, MA), junior Casey Sedlack (Eagle, ID), and first-year Patty Suquilanda (Greenwich, CT).

The second varsity was coxed by senior Gabriella Wakeman (Saratoga Springs, NY), and was made up of sophomore Shernaz Dossabhoy (Belmont, MA), first-year Kathryn Goffin (Falmouth, ME), junior Clara Wilder (Houston, TX), first-year Jessica Frey (Andover, MA), first-year Rachel Coogan (Somerset MA), first-year Ali Pierson (Baltimore, MD), first-year Jennifer Lamy (Chester, NH) and first-year Tess Ruderman (Brookline, MA).
