WORCESTER, Mass. - The Wellesley College crew team completed a solid day of racing at the New England Championships on Saturday held out of Regatta State Park on Worcester's Lake Quinsigamond. The Blue were highlighted by a podium finish from the second varsity eight, who took third place.
Wellesley's second varsity eight breezed through the morning heats to easily qualify for the grand final with a time of 7:25.767, besting NEWMAC-rival Mount Holyoke by a five-second margin. In the Championship race, the Blue notched a third-place finish, behind only Williams and Division I Holy Cross. Wellesley defeated crews from UNH, Bates and Trinity.
The Blue first varsity eight made a strong showing, taking third place in a tough heat to open the day. Wellesley's time of 7:05.417 was the fourth fastest Division III time of the morning, and it qualified the Blue to compete in the petite final. In the final, Wellesley took second place, just three seconds behind Mount Holyoke, to finish as the fifth fastest Division III squad on the day.
In the novice eight race, Wellesley's first boat raced to a spot in the petite final, where they took second place. Wellesley's second novice boat rowed in the third varsity races at the event. The Blue raced hard in the tough field and took fifth place in the grand final, defeating crews from Mount Holyoke and Smith.
Wellesley is back in action at the 2010 ECAC Championships on Saturday and Sunday.
