Wellesley Crew Wins NEWMAC Post-Season Awards
Spillane Named Coach of the Year; Team Wins Sportsmanship Award
BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Wellesley College crew team took home several New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) postseason awards for 2010. Blue head coach Tessa Spillane took home Coach of the Year honors, while the team received the annual NEWMAC Sportsmanship Award. Wellesley also had three student-athletes named to the All-Conference team.
Spillane earned NEWMAC Coach of the Year honors for the second time in her career, previously winning the award in 2008. She, along with Assistant Coach Regan Bernhard '01 and Novice Coach Austin Work, guided the Blue to a second place finish at the recent NEWMAC Championships. Wellesley is ranked eighth overall in Division III and fourth in the New England region.
The team took home the annual Sportsmanship Award, as voted on by the NEWMAC teams. This award is given to the program that most closely demonstrates the ideals of the NEWMAC and its Code of Conduct. Wellesley previously earned the award in 2008 and 2007.
The Blue were also represented on the All-Conference Team. Seniors Hannah Dornbusch (Madison, WI) and Kate Spelman (Scituate, MA) were named to the Varsity team, while Aidan Chambers (Bethesda, MA) was named to the novice All-Conference team.
Blue Crew returns to the water next Saturday, May 1, for the New England Rowing Championships.
