Wellesley Field Hockey Falls to #1 Bowdoin

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Despite stellar play between the pipes for Wellesley keeper Emily Hewitt, the Blue field hockey team could not contain defending national champion, Bowdoin.

Bowdoin all-time leading scorer Lindsay McNamara netted a hat trick as the top-ranked Polar Bear field hockey team defeated Wellesley 4-0 in both team's season opener on Saturday. The Polar Bears extend the nation's longest home-field winning streak to 34 straight games.

McNamara wasted little time getting Bowdoin on the board, scoring off a Kara Kelley feed at 5:36 of the opening half. Bowdoin carried the one-goal lead through intermission thanks to the strong play of Wellesley netminder Emily Hewitt, who made nine first-half saves.

Bowdoin added three tallies in the second half to pull away, with Ingrid Oelschlager's first goal of the season at 47:01 boosting the lead to two goals. McNamara scored her second and third goals later in the period to
ice the game.

McNamara now has 63 career goals in 59 career games. Bowdoin's Emileigh Mercer was forced to make no saves as the Polar Bears held a 29-1 advantage in shots. Hewitt finished with 14 in defeat for the Blue.
